Almost all of Nigeria's leather flows through five historic hubs — a "leather belt" running from the far north down to the south-east. Each has its own speciality, and together they supply the whole country and beyond. Here's how the belt works, and how we tap all of it to fill any order, fast.

The five hubs

Kano — the tanning capital

Kano has tanned leather for over a thousand years and remains Nigeria's largest tanning centre. Much of the famous Red Sokoto goatskin is tanned here before it heads to market or export. For volume, Kano is the engine.

Sokoto — the goatskin

Sokoto gives its name to the Red Sokoto goat, whose skin Europe sold for centuries as "Moroccan leather". The full story is in our guide to Sokoto leather.

Zaria — tanning & finishing

Zaria is a long-standing tanning and finishing centre, known for well-prepared, workable leather.

Aba (Ariaria Market) — the makers

Ariaria International Market in Aba is West Africa's shoemaking heartland — thousands of makers who need cut leather every day. It's where cut and finished leather changes hands in huge volume.

Onitsha (Ochanja Market) — the trade hub

Ochanja Market in Onitsha is a major distribution point where leather from the north meets buyers from the south. It's also one of our two warehouses.
