How to Identify Genuine Leather in Nigeria: 7 Tests Before You Pay

Seven quick tests — smell, water, grain, edge, bend, burn and label — to tell genuine leather from PU and "leather-look" before you pay a naira.

How to Identify Genuine Leather in Nigeria: 7 Tests Before You Pay

Nigeria imports a lot of PU and "leather-look" material that is sold as the real thing. Before you pay, run these seven checks — they take seconds and save you from buying plastic that peels within a year.

1. The smell test

Genuine leather has a rich, natural, slightly musky smell. PU and vinyl smell of chemicals or plastic. If it smells like a new car dashboard, it isn't hide.

2. The water-drop test

Place a small drop of water on the surface. Real leather slowly absorbs it and darkens slightly; synthetic material beads the water and stays on top.

3. The grain test

Look closely at the surface. Real leather has an irregular, natural grain and small imperfections. Synthetics have a repeating, too-perfect texture stamped on.

4. The edge test

Check a cut edge. Genuine leather shows fibrous, slightly rough edges; PU shows a clean fabric or foam backing bonded to a plastic film.

5. The bend test

Fold the material. Real leather wrinkles and changes colour naturally as it bends (like skin). Fake leather stays uniform and stiff.

6. The burn test (seller-assisted)

On a hidden offcut, a tiny flame singes real leather to an ash that smells like burnt hair. Synthetic melts, curls and smells like plastic. Always ask the seller — a confident leather seller will show you.

7. Read the label

"Genuine leather", "top grain", and "full grain" are real. "Man-made material", "PU", "bonded leather", "vegan leather" and "leather-look" are not full hide. In Nigeria, watch for "leather" that actually means plastic film.
