Leather for Shoemaking in Nigeria: A Buyer's Guide for Aba Makers
Which leather to buy for uppers, linings and soles — and how much material a pair of shoes really takes — for Nigerian shoemakers.
Aba makes millions of pairs of shoes a year. If you're building that craft, the material decides the quality — here's how to buy leather for shoemaking in Nigeria.
Uppers
Use full-grain or top-grain cowhide for durable, structured uppers; calfskin for premium smoothness. For a designer look, pebbled and Saffiano-texture leathers hold shape well. Browse shoemaking leather and bag/upper-grade leathers.
Suede options
Genuine suede (not brushed synthetic) makes excellent half-shoes and loafers. Check the nap and backing before buying.
Linings
Thin, soft leather linings breathe better than synthetic and last longer. Goatskin is a popular Nigerian lining.
How much leather per pair?
A typical pair of men's shoes needs roughly 4–6 square feet of upper leather depending on size and style — buy a little extra for cutting waste. Buying a whole hide is cheaper per square foot for regular production.
